Abstract

A kinetic study of the sintering of silica xerogel was wade by following the dehydration of gel spheroids (2000-841)n and 8/41-420p) using a thermogravimetric balance. The scope of the work was extended to include the effects of small additions (usually 5 g. ion 0) of mineralisere on the reaction rate. The additives used were Na5WOa, NaC1l9 L1019 LiBr MOOG, BaCig,CaCl Alm0a, NiO, CdO, ZnO, CraOs and CuO. In most cases it was shown that the additives increase the rate of dehydration, this effect being purely catalytic below the Tammann temperature. However there was a marked tendency for solid-solid interaction to occur above this temperature.
