Abstract

Scope of Works - This thesis was based on the investigation of the initial stages of deformation mainly by an internal friction technique. For this reason it is useful to consider at this stage the nature and scope of internal friction and its measurement. As the deformation of face centred cubic metals gives rise to the diffusion of point defects, it is also of interest to study the effects of point defects on the properties of a metal. In the department in the past, some interest had been shown in internal oxidation as a means of altering the impurity concentration in a solid solution alloy and producing controlled precipitates. It was therefore decided to pursue this field a little further and a brief description of the properties of Internally oxidised alloys is included. As it would be very desirable to extend the field of investigation to body centred cubic metals and as other effects due to impurities intrude, it is convenient to examine the effects of interstitial atoms.
