Abstract

A suitable synthetic route to trimethyldecahydroquinoline nitroxide radicals is described. The key step involves double Michael addition of ammonia to a cross-conjugated dienone which was itself constructed using an aliphatic Friedel-Crafts acylation. Convenient methods of resolving both cis and trans compounds in this series were discovered and a study of the chiroptical properties of the optically active nitroxide radicals thus obtained has provided useful information on the conformation of such molecules. Some preliminary experiments to synthesise the related tetramethyldecahydroisoquinoline nitroxides are described.
