Abstract

The object of this thesis is to trace in detail the genesis and evolution of English biography, and to set forth an estimate of its comparative value. In as much as the criticism of biography has never been collected, a secondary object has been kept in mind; viz., to present the substance of such criticism interwoven with the narrative of development. The claim of the thesis to rank as "an original contribution to learning in relation to literature" is based upon the fact that it embodies the first complete record of careful and somewhat exhaustive research devoted to the development of English biography. It may, therefore, be worthy of a useful, if humble, place in the general history of English literature.
