Abstract

The aims of the present study were: i) to analyse the relationship between the basal metabolic rate (BMR) and the energy ependiture (E.E.) during a standardized physical activity (treadmill walking metabolic rate, TWMR) in a sample of 157 young, healthy, lean and lean and muscular females and males; ii) to analyse the relationship between BMR and TWMR with body mass (B.M.), fat free mass (FFM) and other body composition (B.C.) variables; and, in view of the results obtained, iii) to critically examine the basic assumptions of some of the most widely used methods to assess B.C. For the average population, the use of B.M. or FFM to predict BMR give similar results, but the question arises whether this is the case on individuals on the extremes of the B.C. range such as the very obese or the very lean or lean and muscular subjects. At the light of the results of this thesis, estimations of E.E. and B.C. in lean muscular subjects would require somewhat different factors than those used for the average population although the predictor variables are the same. Needless to say, estimations of E.E. and B. C. through equations are mere approximations for groups of subjects; the biological variability is so wide that accurate values for individuals can only be achieved by direct measurements under strictly controlled conditions.
