Abstract
In writing on Arabic language there is a genre known as Latin al-'ammah, which deals with the purity of Arabic; it is intended to prevent users of the language making common mistakes such as were introduced from different dialects and the speech of non-Arabic speaking Muslims. Religion played a great part in the initiation and development of this genre of writing; indeed, concern for the text of the Qur an may be considered the principal reason for its existence. There are numerous references to the preoccupation of the early Muslims with the prevention of common mistakes in Arabic.
