Abstract

The work contained in the thesis consists of a number of topic areas. 1) It attempts to describe and explain in general terms the concept of a soliton and to enumerate examples of the use of the concept of the soliton in the field of nonlinear optics. A survey of the literature is made and references both theoretical and experimental are discussed.
