Abstract
The experimental work described in this thesis was undertaken in the departments of Pathology at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Glasgow Dental Hospital and the department of Medical Oncology at Glasgow University from October 1974 to August 1977. In the initial stages of the work the author was a Nuffield Foundation Fellow in Pathology and later a lecturer in the department of Oral Medicine and Pathology of the University of Glasgow. The work described was undertaken individually by the author or by technical staff under his direct supervision. Those parts of the thesis which are repetitions of previously published work are indicated in the appropriate sections. Parts of this thesis have been presented at scientific meetings and have been published.
