Abstract
The theme of this research is the passage to the North, or the 'West', as seen through the works of some African novelists. In this study the focus will be on the particular aspect of the African/Western contact - the common experience of a journey by an individual African from one society and culture to another, its inpact on the individual, and the writer's sense of that individual as an outsider thereafter to both milieux.
