Abstract
A review of previous studies in stiffened and unstiffened plates is presented. A numerical method developed by Smith et al [28] for the analysis of stiffened panels under uni-axial loading is used. The analysis takes into account buckling and post-buckling behaviour of plate and stiffener elements. The thesis contains a description of this beam-column approach which uses an inelastic non-linear finite element technique. A parametric study which includes the effects of plate slenderness, column slenderness, initial deformations, stiffener to plate area ratio and residual stresses is carried out. Using this parametric study, simplified analytical models for deriving the maximum compression strengths and post-buckling behaviour and strengths of a practical range of stiffened panels are derived. The results are compared with existing numerical and experimental data. This modelling derived for the strength and post-ultimate behaviour of longitudinally stiffened panels, under uni-axial compression loading, is used for estimating the ultimate longitudinal bending strength of some box girders.
