Abstract

The Thesis describes a new method of duplicating X-ray negatives. It was prompted by the need to acquire for teaching purposes, radiographs of oral and facial conditions which are rarely seen in a purely dental school. The duplication of radiographs had always been a tedious and unsatisfactory procedure generally involving the photographic department and necessitating a series of processes which invariably produced a copy inferior to the original. Confronted by the shortcomings and difficulties of former techniques for radiographic duplication, it seemed desirable to find a simple and efficient method of producing a duplicate radiograph comparable with the original and one which would require no photographic equipment for its production. It was considered necessary to have the process completed entirely within the Radiology Department by the radiographers, using a standardised technique and one which would give uniform results with as little disturbance as possible to the normal routine of the department. The Thesis describes an original and simple method of duplicating radiographs within the confines of the radiographic department, with no disturbance to the normal routine of the radiographers, and without the aid of photographic equipment. The various stages in the evolvement of the new technique are described with the final achievement of producing an enhanced duplicate radiograph from an original X-ray negative. The improvement in both the subjective and objective quality of the duplicate negative was confirmed by Dr. Lenihan, Consultant Physicist to the Western Regional Hospital Board, by a series of densitometer tests. Throughout the Thesis, the results of each experiment were determined by densitometer tests which are presented in graph form and record a gradual improvement in the method of duplication. A description is given of the applications of duplication and a method explained for duplicating a composite series of radiographs upon one sheet of film which can also be made into a photographic slide for teaching purposes. An investigation into the duplication of chest radiographs was carried out at the request of the Mass Radiography Centre, Glasgow. A report on the duplication is included in the Thesis. A chapter describes the application of the technique to diagnostic evaluation of positive and negative duplicates of the original, and deals with such difficult conditions as fractures of the scaphoid bone. A report from the Orthopaedic Department of the Western Infirmary, Glasgow, is included. Finally a description is given of a method of duplication of X-ray negatives by an electronic photographic printer. An appendix accompanies the Thesis and contains the full series of X-rays and duplicates which were used throughout the investigation. They are not necessary for the Thesis proper, which contains sufficient illustrations, but they are included in an appendix for their technical value to radiologists.
