Abstract

The constitution of mycophenolic acid, a mould metabolite of P. brevi-compactum, is dlscussed and its structure confirmed as 4-methyl-5-methoxy-6-(5'-carboxy-3'-methylpent-2'-enyl)-7-hydroxyphthalide by the synthesis of 4-methyl-5:7-dimethoxy-6-carboxy-methylphthalide, a degradation product of the monomethyl ether of the acid and by infrared spectroscopy of the acid and its methyl ether.
