Abstract
The dissertation critically examines Galt's literary output related to North American subjects. This includes two novels and twenty six articles for periodical publications. It sets the literature within the historical context of Galt's role in establishing the Canada Company, his work in Canada and the aftermath of his dismissal from the Company. It also shows links with Galt's earlier novels and with the Enlightenment ideas which were current at that time.
