Abstract

This thesis presents a comprehensive illustrated review of published literature on the effect of stress raisers in the form of holes, notches and fillets in plane stress fields. A theoretical analysis is given of the effect of a cruciform type 'crack' in an infinite plate tinder uniform tension at infinity, using the MUSKHELISHVILI method, the 'crack' being simulated by two machined slits at 90
