Abstract
The in vivo isomerisation of iso-pentenyl pyrophosphate (13) to dimethylallyl pyrophosphate (14) and the condensation of these two C-5 units to geranyl pyrophosphate (15), although formally recognisable as SE2 processes (Scheme 9) have been rationalised in a stepwise manner. One reason for doing so is the uncertainty as to the stereochemical preference in the non-enzymic SE reaction and this is compounded by the fact that of the two biological reactions, one proceeds with overall syn- and the other with overall anti-stereochemistry.
