Figgis, Laurence (2013) (In)edible beauty: the surreal, the uncanny, the sentimental in Walt Disney's fairy-tale cartoons, 1937-1991. MPhil(R) thesis, University of Glasgow.

This research has not been informed by direct visual comparison between Disney animation and works of avant-garde surrealism. Instead the author has drawn on verbal texts produced by writers and artists associated with the movement (notably those of Andre Breton, Salvador Dali and Louis Aragon) to interrogate a small number of Walt Disney's animated films produced between 1937 and 1991. The thesis considers the disturbance of taste in Disney's much-reviled sentimental oeuvre as a form of pictorial and psychological disturbance analogous to Surrealist concepts of 'convulsive' and 'edible beauty'.
