Abstract
In the first section the source, history and formation of gamma batti gum and its physico-chemical properties and molecular structure were outlined. A general outline of the physical chemistry of polyelectrolytes was given together with an account of such polyelectrolytes us gum acacia, gum tragacanth, carrageonin and sodium carboxymethylcellulose, which are important in pharmacy. The theory of light scattering was also reviewed. In the experimental sections of the thesis work was reported on an authenticated sample of ghatti gum from Anogeissus Latifolia (Combretacease) which was fractionated by acidic alcocholic precipitation ( Fraction 1) AND CHROMATOGRAPHY ON SILICA GEL ( Fractions 2 and 3). The equivalent weights of the three fractions were found to be 1750, 1800 and 2400 respectively. The sodium salts of the tree fractions were studied in acuecus solutions and in various concentrations of sodium chloride. The molecular weights of the fractions were determined from the Zimm plots constructed from the light-scattering results. From the light-sesttering experiments an idea of the radii of gyration and molecular weight were obtained. The molecules of sodium ghattate appear to be rod-shaped in both aquesus solutions and in solutions of sodium chloride. The molecular weights of Fractions 1, 2 and 3 were found to be 2.1, 2.7 and 2.6 x10.
