Abstract

Chapter 1 A survey of some present work being conducted in this country on contemporary religious experience; some reflections on how such evidence may be used; the place of despair in such contemporary reports. Chapter 2 A consideration of the life of Jacob as being an example of the phenomenon in sacred literature, with particular emphasis on the account of the meeting with the stranger at Penuel on the banks of the Jabbok. Chapter 3 An analysis of the Book of Job as a second account of the phenomenon in the Old Testament. Chapter 4 A survey of some psychodyhamic theories on the nature of depression and its cure; a consideration of the validity of "illness" as a model for understanding the nature of depression; a review of two theorists who recognise the phenomenon and seek to interpret it. Chapter 5 A review of the phenomenon from a religious standpoint; particularly, the association between depression and the consciousness of sin; the role of the sense of divine forgiveness.
