Abstract
The thesis is divided into two distinct parts. The first deals with a low temperature technique which was developed to determine the molecular structure of dinitrogen tetroxide, and the subsequent determination of this structure. The X-ray diffraction intensities for planes in two zones of the dinitrogen tetroxide lattice have been obtained, and a structure for the molecule described which satisfies the observed results with a 16% discrepancy. Part 2. describes the further refinement of the structure of succinic acid, by the Triple Fourier Series method. The method of obtaining accurate atomic co-ordinates from the summation totals is described in detail, and molecular dimensions resulting from the co-ordinates are reported. In an appendix to the thesis some preliminary work on the crystal structure of azelaic acid is reported, with reference to previous work on the acid.
