Abstract

This thesis explores the settlement names on the South Harris machair. Identification of sources is a key objective, and the inter-relationship between map sources as well as the significance of textual references is examined in detail. In particular, detailed examination of the sources and processes used by the Ordnance Survey are reviewed, with reference to the recently digitised Original Object Name Books.
