Abstract
SYNOPSIS OF THESIS. I sought to discover Arran before roads, enclosed farms, and modernity to get some sense of the earlier Megalithic landscape. I traced the earliest written references to Arran that I could find. I studied the old accounts, and tried to relate them to the ground, and see what remained. I studied accounts of missing monuments and sought to place them in their stated locations. I considered fairly what the old writers said about the monuments and considered what of that had stood the test of time. I measured their work against the most modern material known to me. This done, I considered what differences, if any, my research had made to the accepted paradigms of the island’s narrative. I concluded that it does charge it and that there is value in reevaluating older and antiquarian accounts.
